Lesson 1: What is DYW?

In this lesson, Sarai gives you an overview of the 3-week Design Your Wardrobe class. She’ll tell you about the design pyramid and show you a preview of some of the creative exercises from throughout the class. Our next wardrobe-building party starts on February 17th, so check back here for the rest of the videos!

Do you have a hard time picking projects to sew? Does it sometimes feel impossible to make all the projects in your head fit together, or decide which ones are worth your time and energy?

I really want to show you that it can be simple to design and show a wardrobe, but you need the right framework to make it easy and fun.

That’s why we created Design Your Wardrobe, a 3-week program that will help you sew clothes you want to wear.

If you love to sew, you are probably a creative person. You probably get excited about a bunch of different projects, but you might have a hard time narrowing down what you’d like to sew and wear.

At the end of this series, you’ll have a personalized, organized queue of sewing projects, a plan to make them, and you’ll have made some new sewing buddies along the way.

In this video class, available exclusively to Seamwork members, I’m going to walk you through the entire DYW process, with the help of some other members of the Seamwork team.

We’ll share our process with you, step by step, to help keep you motivated and inspired.

So what is DYW and how does it work? In this video, I’ll give you a little intro.

With DYW, Instead of thinking about an entire wardrobe, we’re going to design a single collection for a single season, just like a designer.

As a Seamwork member, you can complete DYW any time you’d like, with our self-guided ebook.

But twice a year, for spring/summer and fall/winter, we have a really fun wardrobe-building party, where we all design our collections together. We’ll send you an email every day, you can watch a video, complete some fun exercises, and then hop over to the Seamwork community to chat with others who are desgining, too.

Here’s what it looks like.

In week 1, we’ll set a goal for our collections and create a mood board.

In week 2, we’ll define a color palette.

In week 3, we’ll pair patterns and fabrics to create looks to sew.

Every day, you’ll read a dispatch and complete a worksheet. You’ll explore your style, play with fabric, and pick patterns to sew.

We’ll give you tools, like a collection planner, printable pattern flats, and style inspiration to help you make the most of this process.

You’ll have access to our private community to chat about a new question every day and share your progress.

The concept of DYW is simple, because we’ve broken it down into totally manageable pieces.

You’ll learn how to think like a designer by using this design pyramid to create a concept, select a color palette, and plan looks.

As you move up this pyramid, you’ll go from more abstract ideas to more concrete ideas, just like a fashion designer.

When you’re done with DYW, all you have left to do is sew!

If this sounds like fun, we’d love to have you join our wardrobe-building party.

The class is free for Seamwork members, so if you’re a member, just log into the Classroom to get started. If you aren’t a member, we’ll link you to more information about Seamwork below.

We can’t wait to see how you use DYW to create collections of clothes that you’ll love to wear every day.
